DINING ROOM COMBINATIONS AND HOW TO EASILY UPDATE YOURS

With the upcoming holidays, I’ve been thinking a lot about dining spaces. I love to keep things interesting in a dining room by mixing styles, wood tones, and varying the seating. Clients always ask me “But is it ok if it doesn’t all ‘match’ ?” and my response is always “YES!” To keep things looking collected and inviting, try to stay away from the matchy-matchy sets. You can still make everything look cohesive and intentional even without perfectly matching.

Here are some combinations that work well:

Just because you have a traditional table doesn’t mean you need to use traditional chairs. By pairing modern chairs with a more traditional table (like in the first example), we can keep things looking fresh. Add in some traditional upholstered chairs with modern lines and you’ve got a dining room that feels formal yet approachable.

Mixing wood tones and texture (like in the third example) creates a really warm and classic feel. The light upholstered chairs provide some nice contrast and help break up the browns.

HOW TO UPDATE WITHOUT REPLACING EVERYTHING:

Ok, now let’s talk about what to do if you’re stuck with a matching set and don’t want to replace it all. Here are a couple simple steps you can take to freshen up your dining room:

  • Grab the paint! If you’ve followed me on Instagram then you know I love to repurpose older pieces. Whether it’s old chairs or a table, painting it a new color may be the simple fix your room needs.

  • Re-upholster the seats. Swapping out old fabric for something new can completely transform the vibe of a space. This step is actually much easier than you think! All you need is a staple gun and some fresh fabric. I even like to use blackout curtain panels because they are nice and thick.

  • Sell just your table or chairs on Marketplace and put your $ toward a new piece or a new vintage piece.

  • Add new head chairs to break up the matchiness. Almost all of the combinations above contain different head chairs. Here are some great chairs that would work well at the head of the table:
