POWDER ROOM DETAILS

I started dreaming up ideas for our powder room the day we moved in. After living here for a little over a year, it was time to put some of those plans into real action. The original room was in decent condition, but the vanity felt really bulky, all the finishes were builder-grade, and the color wasn’t doing anything for the space.

The Feel

Whenever I design a space, I really think about how I want a space to feel. I wanted this space to have a mood, but still feel a bit fancy. I also really wanted to add in some details that would help it feel like it had been around for much longer than 20 years (in a good way).

The Moulding

We added wall panel moulding to really give the space some dimension- it’s surprising how much it can add to a space! Rather than use a basic crown moulding, we carried over the same crown from our dining room and office which is a dentil crown. I love the ornate detail it adds and so happy it came with our home!

The Color

Since I knew I wanted this space to feel moody and cozy, I sampled a couple of really saturated colors. Knoxville Gray by Ben Moore was one that I sampled at both full and half strength. Reducing the strength of paint can do something different for every color so it’s always good to sample first. In this space, the 50% strength really allowed more of the blue and green tones to come through. It felt rich and was exactly what I wanted.

I decided to paint the walls and ceiling the same color to make the space feel seamless. Painting a smaller room all one color can actually make it feel larger and it definitely did that!

Mixed Metals

I love mixing metals- aged brass and polished nickel are probably my favorite mix. I don’t follow any hard rules when mixing metals, but in this case, I decided to alternate their placement to really help your eyes move around the small space.

The Floors and Baseboards

For the floors, I went with a classic flat white penny tile and light gray grout (Pro Grout Dove Grey). During a last minute trip to the Tile Shop, I saw some gorgeous firenze carrara honed marble skirting and had to include it! Luckily they had the exact amount I needed in back (that never happens!). I’m so glad it worked out because it’s probably my favorite detail in the space.

The Art

Art is always a good idea, especially in a powder room. I recently stacked these prints here and love them together. I used a vintage gold 8x10 frame on top of a modern black metal 16x20 frame. Every room needs a little black so the frame and background of the swan helps achieve that.
